2012 Hoover Dam Half Marathon

With this being Ryan’s first official half marathon, and a return to the course that holds my half marathon PR, we had high expectations for this race all year. After running a 1:56 last year, I wanted to better my time — and hopefully beat Dalyn’s PR of 1:53 set at Surf City in 2011. Ryan and I decided that 1:50 was our goal, while Scott just wanted to finish as he was still nursing some injuries from the past couple months.

In truth, none of us were 100% healthy coming into the race, which made our goal time pretty out of reach from the start, but it’s good to have goals all the same. Since running the Bootlegger 25K a month ago, I’ve only ran on Saturdays, skipping the important mid-week runs while waiting for my bruised right foot to heal (it almost has), while Ryan has had knee issues after playing six soccer games in a row a couple weeks back.

Warrior Dash Las Vegas 2012

Race Name: Warrior Dash Las Vegas

Date: October 20, 2012

Team Members: Rob, Ryan, Scott, Taylor, Nickee, Dustin

Footwear: Vibram Spyridon LS (Rob), Vibram Spyridon (Ryan), New Balance MT-101 (Scott)

After scheduling Tough Mudder for October 6, a mere two weeks before Warrior Dash, it certainly wasn’t on our radar of events that we’d be doing. We’re also obstacle race fiends and always appreciate a good deal, so when a Groupon popped up in our inboxes, we jumped on it!

After Tough Mudder two weeks ago, we really toned down our training and relaxed for a couple weeks, but we knew there was almost nothing we could do (short of breaking a limb) in just two weeks that would make Warrior Dash hard after completing Tough Mudder. That being said, we still expected to have a good time and we weren’t disappointed!

Tough Mudder: Las Vegas 2012

Race Name: Tough Mudder Las Vegas 2012

Date: October 6, 2012

Location: Beatty, NV

Team Members: Rob, Ryan, Scott, Amy, Jed, Valarie, Ron, Jonathan, Tom, Erik

Footwear: Vibram Spyridon LS (Rob), Vibram Spyridon (Ryan), New Balance 110 (Scott)

Tough Mudder is by far our favorite event to date. It’s a perfect mix of tough running and challenging obstacles, plus we got to play in the mud. This race being two hours from home made it close enough to be considered our home course, which gave us a little extra motivation to make it a good race. We were able to double the size of our team from Tough Mudder SoCal and had many more spectators at this event than we did in Temecula. Having an audience of family and friends makes any race, especially tough races like this, better. When you’re eight miles into a race like Tough Mudder, beat up and tired, it completely revamps you when you see your family and friends on the horizon and can hear them cheering you on, or laughing as you nosedive into the mud.

What sets Tough Mudder apart from most other races is the emphasis on camaraderie and enjoying the challenge. Whether it’s pushing you to run hill after hill through sandy terrain, or conquering dire fears of ice-cold water, heights, or an electric shock, you’re teammates and fellow competitors are there to help and motivate you along the way. Teamwork is emphasized the second you climb over the wall into the starting corral (an heart-pumping and awesome way to start a race) and the MC begins delivering his pep talk explaining that Tough Mudder is a team event, not a race, and you’re goal is to help the person next to you finish. The Tough Mudder pledge recited just before the race starts says it perfectly. Tough Mudder is all about having a fantastic time with a group of other crazy people (like us) while testing your limits mentally and physically. I can speak for all of us Crazies when I say that the feeling you get after finishing a Tough Mudder event is unlike any other event, because it’s challenging but you have a fantastic time others, instead of competing by yourself like most races.

2011 Scorpion Warrior

Race Name: Scorpion Warrior Las Vegas

Date: March 17, 2012

Team Members: Rob, Ryan, Tom

Footwear: Vibram Spyridon LS (Rob), Vibram Bikila (Ryan)

After completing our first Tough Mudder and our first obstacle race we were immediately hungry for more. Scorpion Warrior certainly was not on our radar. We didn’t even know it existed, and with good reason, when we stumbled across the race on Groupon, at a very reasonable price. After having such a phenomenal time participating in Tough Mudder, and our next one months away, we jumped at the opportunity to participate in another obstacle race.

This wasn’t even close to being our favorite race, but we made do. We found our own ways to enjoy the race and had some fun with what little we were provided with.

Tough Mudder: SoCal #1 2012

Race Name: Tough Mudder SoCal #1

Date: February 29, 2012

Team Members: Rob, Ryan, Dalyn, Adam, Tom

Footwear: Vibram Spyridon LS (Rob), Vibram Bikila (Ryan), Vibram Bikila (Dalyn)

Tough Mudder event consists of roughly eleven miles of trail running, plus about twenty-five obstacles with names such as ‘Death March’, ‘Arctic Enema’, and ‘Electroshock Therapy’. They claim to be “Probably The Toughest Event on the Planet” and it has to be at least in the discussion for normal athletes like most of us. Knowing all that, you must get something amazing at the end, right? Prize money? Nope. The medal that makes all marathon medals jealous? Nope. A normal medal? Again, nope. What you do get is the sweetest orange headband you will ever own emblazoned with ‘TOUGH MUDDER’, and the satisfaction of completing one of the toughest obstacle courses most people will ever attempt (also one of the most fun, just take a look at their pledge).

As Tough Mudder is all about teamwork and camaraderie, as soon as we decided to do the event, we started asking everybody we thought would be interested if they wanted to join our team. We also came up with an official team name: Crazier Than Thou. After quite a bit of initial interest, we ended up with only five members of the team, but we still managed to have a blast! It was great having other people we know out on the course to help out and get through some of the challenges together. We all assisted one another by pushing or pulling each other over the Berlin Walls, helping each other up Mt. Everest, sharing our pains after Arctic Enema, or just motivating each other through the running portions, which may have been the most difficult parts of the course.
